SPORTS THERAPY FROM THE POSITIVE MIND METHODOLOGY (PMM)

What is sports therapy?

Sports therapy is one of several interventions used to support the development of individuals with autism.

Using the Positive Mind Method, individuals with autism who have an interest in sports are supported in developing skills and personal growth through physical activity. Sports therapy can also be beneficial for individuals who require additional sensory input through movement-based activities.

Sports and the Sensory System

Many individuals with autism experience differences in sensory processing. As a result, they may seek more sensory input than others.

This need for sensory stimulation can also contribute to behaviours such as rocking or restlessness. Physical and sensory activities provide an appropriate and structured way to experience and regulate these sensations.

Sports offer a socially acceptable and meaningful way to receive sensory input, while also requiring individuals to respond to sensory information. This supports the further development of sensory processing skills, which can positively influence functioning in daily life.

Sports and Social Behaviour

Individuals with autism may experience challenges in initiating conversations or responding to social interaction.

Participation in sports provides natural opportunities to practice interaction, cooperation, and shared play. Team sports, in particular, help individuals learn how to coordinate with others, follow rules, and work together.

In this way, sports can support the development of social skills and strengthen connection with others.

Sports for Individuals with Autism

Each individual with autism is unique and has different sensory and developmental needs. Therefore, preferences for sports also vary, depending on the type of sensory input and experience they find motivating and regulating.

Sports and Learning

Sports can also be used to support learning and classroom participation. Movement-based activities can help individuals regulate attention, improve engagement, and support readiness for learning.

Using the Positive Mind Methodology (PMM), interventions are developed that focus on strengths and interests, promoting positive emotions and engagement. This allows the focus to shift from solely targeted behaviours to strengthening intrinsic motivation and personal values.

By focusing on intrinsic values, programmes can be expanded to further develop character strengths and resilience.

Sports therapy for individuals with autism who have an interest in sports therefore offers many benefits and can support both learning and development. By working from the area of interest—in this case, sports—individuals are more likely to engage, open up, and develop their potential.

Where Does Sports Therapy Take Place?

Sports therapy can be provided at home, at school, or in a clinical setting. At the Autism Expertise Center, sports therapy is delivered by a therapist or, under supervision, by a Positive Mind Autism Sports Coach.
