Positive Mind Methodology (PMM)

Using Positive Mind Methodology (PMM) when working with individuals with autism can help them live a fuller and more enriched quality of life. Optimism, resilience and kindness are some of the key characteristics of positive psychology from which Positive Mind Methodology (PMM) was developed. Through positive psychology we can promote these and other character strengths, not only to improve an individual’s quality of life, but also to help an individual develop new assessment and intervention strategies that focus on positive problem solving. We flip the switch, as it were, and work from the area of interest. Positive Mind Methodology (PMM) attempts to identify and understand core human strengths. It involves looking at what qualities help a person be resilient in the face of adversity and looking at what goes well, even in bad situations. It focuses on what is healthy and what is strong in the person with autism and how these elements help them not only cope more effectively, but also thrive and become more adaptable in a world of challenges. The unique perspective of Positive Mind Methodology (PMM) is that it operates from a strengths-based rather than a deficit or pathological basis, with the primary focus on increasing positive personal qualities to maximize meaning and engagement in life, as well as positive emotional states.

Treatment programs

Programs within the Autism Expertise Center (AECSU) are typically designed to reduce inappropriate behaviors and increase desired behaviors. By developing practices that promote positive traits and focusing on the area of interest that promotes the individual with autism’s positive emotions, the emphasis can shift from specifically targeted behaviors to focusing on enhancing intrinsic values. By looking at intrinsic values, programming and interventions can be expanded to enhance these character strengths within a wide range of therapeutic techniques that include positive problem solving. Treatment and programming can continue to focus on basic principles of behavior modification while incorporating visual supports, repetitive practice, high levels of reinforcement, and a positive problem solving approach to create opportunities for individuals to become more independent and fulfilled. For example, if an individual with autism consistently destroys community property, in addition to a program that focuses on property destruction, our professionals can also address the long-term value of being a productive and integrated member of the community. To accomplish this, interventions reinforce kind, empathetic, and courageous behaviors and teach optimistic thinking.
